Workshops and performance with Eve Stainton

Margate-based men are invited to join artist Eve Stainton for two free physical workshops, culminating in a live collaborative artwork.

Artist and choreographer Eve Stainton is looking for a small group of Margate based men to take part in two free workshops and a live artwork at Quench Gallery.

As part of the exhibition, Eve will build a large concrete wall that travels through the different spaces of the gallery. During the opening, participants will work alongside Eve to build, dismantle and rebuild sections of the wall, using physical tasks developed through the two workshops.

No previous experience of performance, movement or bricklaying is needed!

What will we do?
The workshops will explore the physical actions involved in the manual labour of bricklaying- carrying, lifting, moving, taking weight, working with hard and soft materials and negotiating space together. We will work with bricks, a cement mixer and non-toxic mortar, developing physical tasks and ways of working together that can be brought into the gallery during the exhibition opening. Some exercises may involve touch or sharing weight with another person, but everything will be approached through conversation and consent.

The workshops form part of Eve's ongoing research into how ideas of threat and masculinity are socially constructed, and how they can come to feel concrete or immovable. Through manual labour and collective physical action, the project explores what happens when these structures are built, challenged and pulled apart.

Who can participate?
Eve is particularly interested in working with men from Margate who have different or marginalised experiences of masculinity, including working-class men, trans men, men who have experience of the criminal justice system, and men of different ages and body types.

You don't need to consider yourself a performer or an artist. You just need to be interested in trying something physical, working with other people and being part of the making of a live artwork. There will likely be a broad range of people taking part, and the workshops will be adapted to the group. Protective equipment including gloves, masks, shoe protection and trowels will be provided.
Please note that the workshop space is not step-free.

The workshops are free to attend but booking is necessary.

ARTIST BIO

Eve Stainton is an artist and choreographer born in Manchester and living in London, UK. They create multi-disciplinary performances that involve movement practices, live manual labour, digital collage, and other invisible forces like drama and suspense. Their research is rooted in community, interested in how differently marginalised people experience and come into relationship with power structures and societal conventions. Often working with codes or tropes of gender, class and threat, their work stages clunky physical negotiations and reveals ‘behind the scenes’ mechanisms of working together to show a kind of reality that isn’t seamless.
